The story

Barbican Kitchen Plymouth – Michelin Recommended International Dining at Plymouth Gin Distillery

Barbican Kitchen, Plymouth

Since 2006, brothers Chris and James Tanner have run Barbican Kitchen from a remarkable setting: the world-famous Plymouth Gin Distillery on Southside Street. The restaurant takes full advantage of the Westcountry larder, with menus built around local meats, vegetables and top-quality fish from a trusted network of suppliers. The aim is straightforward: fresh local food at a realistic price.

The style is international in outlook, but the ingredients are firmly rooted in Devon and Cornwall. Whether it’s line-caught fish from the coast or meat from nearby farms, the kitchen lets the produce speak. The dining room is stylish and welcoming, with a lift providing wheelchair access to the lower section. A private dining room is available for up to 24 guests, and the team can tailor menus for special occasions or business meetings.

2026 marks Barbican Kitchen’s twentieth anniversary. To celebrate, the restaurant is offering 20% off the set menu throughout April – a gesture of thanks to regulars and visitors alike. The set menu, like the main menu, changes with the seasons, reflecting whatever is best from the region’s suppliers.

Barbican Kitchen holds a Michelin Recommended listing, a recognition that aligns with its consistent, unfussy approach to cooking. There’s no need for complicated descriptions here: the food is honest, the service is warm, and the setting – inside a working gin distillery – adds a sense of history to every meal. Pre- or post-dinner, guests can visit the distillery’s Refectory bar for a drink or take a gin tour.

The restaurant serves lunch on Fridays and Saturdays, and dinner Tuesday to Saturday. Booking is advised, especially for larger parties.

On the first floor of the Plymouth gin distillery, the walls cast in ancient stone, is Chris and James Tanner’s excellent value restaurant where on-the-ball staff keep everything motoring, from ordering to cocktail production. Expect the likes of fillet of grilled mackerel with a ‘rather delicious’ Peruvian green sauce, pork belly with crisp crackling, ‘heavenly’ apple purée and ‘moreish’ creamy mash, and a perfect crème brûlée. Global wines come by the glass, carafe or bottle.
