The story
On the Ryde seafront, with the Solent stretching out through floor-to-ceiling windows, RT Café Grill is chef Robert Thompson’s most relaxed kitchen. The description on the restaurant’s own site is precise: a modern European bistro, seasonally-led, with an open terrace for summer and a 180-degree view that turns every table into a window seat. The tone is set early — relaxed, never careless.
The food is modern British bistro cooking, built around four menus that change with the seasons. There’s an À La Carte menu for lunch and dinner, a separate Grill Specials list, breakfast for mornings, and a dedicated Puddings menu to finish. The cooking is direct: grills, plates, classics, and seasonal specials. No fuss, no invention for its own sake.
The restaurant earned a Michelin Recommended award for 2026, and was named Best New Restaurant in the UK at the British Restaurant Awards 2024. Robert Thompson himself was named Best UK Chef at the same awards in 2025. These honours speak to the kitchen’s consistency and the warm, precise cooking that defines the place.
The dining room is open Tuesday through Sunday, serving breakfast from 9am, lunch from 12pm, and dinner until 9.30pm. The bar and terrace stay open until 10pm for drinks and bar snacks, and walk-ins are welcome. For groups of eight or more, the team arranges a private table — or you can enquire about The Cellar.
RT Café Grill is the kind of restaurant that does one thing well: honest, seasonal British cooking in a room that lets the view do the work. It’s a place to linger over breakfast, settle in for lunch, or watch the light fade over the Solent at dinner.
