The story
In the Stonor Valley, within the Chiltern Hills, The Golden Ball is a modern British pub-restaurant run by husband-and-wife team Ben and Priya Watson. Ben, a local who spent a decade in London working alongside chefs including Jason Atherton and Gordon Ramsay, was part of the team that launched Core by Clare Smyth, a restaurant that earned three Michelin stars. Priya brings experience from the front-of-house at renowned London restaurants such as The Square, Gymkhana, and Brigadiers.
After their daughter Lily was born in 2022, the couple left London to establish their own business in the South Oxfordshire countryside. The small, frequently changing menu focuses on modern British cooking, with the occasional subtle touch of Indian spicing. Local and seasonal ingredients take centre stage, and the cooking aims for minimal manipulation to let the flavours speak. The Golden Ball has been recognised as a Michelin Recommended restaurant, a testament to the quality of the cooking in this relaxed setting.
The food offering includes an à la carte menu, a set lunch, a Sunday à la carte, and a tasting menu. All starters and mains are prepped and cooked to order by Ben himself. The atmosphere is welcoming, with Priya’s experienced and friendly touch ensuring attentive service. The Golden Ball is a place where high-level culinary skill meets the genuine warmth of a family-run country pub.
