The story

The Stag & Huntsman in Reading: Modern British Dining in Hambleden's Drawing Room

Open fire and seasonal sourcing

The Stag & Huntsman in Reading anchors its modern British cooking around open-fire techniques and a network of trusted local suppliers. Ingredients travel short distances from Paddock Farm in Oxfordshire and the Culden Faw Estate, while the kitchen draws on Scottish game from the Ben Alder Estate. Menus evolve with the seasons, blending proper pub comfort with refined selections that reflect the rhythm of the countryside.

Standout plates and refined touches

Recognition from the Good Food Guide highlights specific wins within this Modern British kitchen, including cured trout served with seaweed salad. The Old Winchester risotto combines oyster mushrooms and rocket pesto for a rich centerpiece, while desserts offer a dark chocolate and coconut crémeux that balances sweetness with depth. Sunday roasts draw consistent crowds, supported by a set lunch option that keeps midday dining accessible.

The Drawing Room and village setting

An 18th-century building frames the experience, with the Drawing Room offering diners views of a pretty garden and the warmth of an open fire. Visitors often settle at the narrow bar for real ales and a concise wine list before moving to the main space. Situated in the centre of Hambleden on the Culden Faw Estate, the venue serves as a hub for walks through the Chilterns or trips to nearby Henley-on-Thames.

The Good Food Guide — Local Gem

Surrounded by captivating countryside, this inviting 18th-century pub with rooms aims to please all-comers. Drinkers populate the narrow bar (real ales, a short wine list), while diners head for the Drawing Room with its open fire and views of the pretty garden. As for the food, the kitchen works to a brief, good-value set lunch and a slightly larger carte featuring pub classics alongside some fancier dishes. Standards can vary, though our cured trout with seaweed salad followed by an Old Winchester risotto with oyster mushrooms and rocket pesto were winners – likewise a dessert of coconut and dark chocolate crémeux. The pub's Sunday roasts also attract plenty of plaudits. Efficient service too.
