The story
Thackeray's occupies a building with real character. The former residence of author William Makepeace Thackeray, this 300-year-old house feels like something from a fantasy world, with odd angles, sloped ceilings and off-kilter stairways. Overlooking the open grassy common just off London Road in Royal Tunbridge Wells, the setting is fairly unique and a work of art in itself.
Head Chef Patrick Hill brings immense knowledge and creativity to the kitchen, crafting ever-changing, seasonal menus. The philosophy is one of relaxed fine dining, free from pretension. Classic European culinary philosophies are applied to modern dishes, with a strong belief in the importance of provenance. The kitchen uses the highest quality local produce wherever possible, ensuring each plate reflects both skill and a deep respect for ingredients.
Thackeray's is not an exclusive restaurant and has no desire to be one. The atmosphere is warm, with friendly, attentive and knowledgeable service. A wide variety of menus is offered, from a daily set lunch to an indulgent Chef's tasting menu, all designed to inspire and delight. This commitment to consistent quality and detail has earned the restaurant a Michelin Recommendation, recognising it as a place of note in the world of Modern British fine dining.
