The story

The Counter by Robin Read – Modern British Tasting Menus in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Michelin Recommended

The Counter by Robin Read: A family tradition reimagined

In the heart of Royal Tunbridge Wells, 77 Calverley Road, The Counter by Robin Read is a small, focused restaurant that puts the food front and centre. Chef-owner Robin Read draws on a deep family history: his maternal grandfather was a Master Butcher in Staffordshire, and his paternal great-grandfather a Greengrocer in South London. That lineage of working with the best produce over a counter is the foundation of everything here.

The restaurant offers a choice of three seasonal tasting menus: ‘The Discovery’ (five courses), ‘The Journey’ (seven courses), and ‘The Counter Experience’ (nine courses). The nine-course menu is also served at the Kitchen Counter, where Read himself presents each dish. A three-course lunch menu is available Thursday to Saturday at £25 per person, providing an accessible entry point. The cooking is rooted in classical techniques but driven by a curiosity for new methods, always asking the same first question: “What’s in season?”

Seasonal, sustainable, local

The Counter’s approach is refreshingly direct. “If an ingredient is in season, it’s always going to be at its best,” they explain. The kitchen maximises every part of an ingredient, minimising waste and reducing food miles. Being based in Kent, the Garden of England, and close to the coast, allows Read to work with a network of small, independent farmers, growers, and producers. The team visits farms, forests, and warehouses across the country, building relationships with the people behind the produce. This commitment to Modern British cooking, with its emphasis on locality and seasonality, is evident in every plate.

A destination with a big-city attitude

The Counter has earned a Michelin Recommended status, a recognition that aligns with the warm reception from critics. Grace Dent of The Guardian called it “delicious and charming… treating the inner Veruca Salt in all of us with pure imagination.” The Good Food Guide described it as “the best news for Tunbridge Wells… a relaxing neighbourhood restaurant with a big-city attitude.” The dining space is intimate, with counter seating that puts guests in direct conversation with the kitchen. In warmer months, the Garden Terrace offers a small plates menu, and regular Kappo nights bring Japanese-inspired small plates to the table. The atmosphere is relaxed yet precise, driven by a singular vision of responsible, seasonal eating.

Whether you choose the full nine-course experience at the Kitchen Counter or a lighter lunch, The Counter delivers a modern British meal that feels both personal and purposeful.
