The story

Baern Café & Bakery in Saint Monans celebrates Scottish seasonal baking

Origins and philosophy

Baern Café & Bakery in Saint Monans operates as a distinctly Scottish cafe where founders Hazel Powell and Giacomo Pesce transformed a repurposed farmstead into a hyper-local kitchen in 2022. Every vegetable scrap becomes a ferment or powder while animal parts are preserved through the winter months. This zero-waste approach earned the spot a Local Gem distinction in the 2026 Good Food Guide, recognizing how thoroughly they integrate their dining room with the surrounding Balcaskie Estate.

Daily menu and baking

The Scottish kitchen writes its offerings on a blackboard each morning because the menu shifts with whatever arrives from the East Neuk Market Garden. Mornings feature a rotating brunch plate alongside sourdough loaves and sweet tarts pulled straight from the oven. By midday the counter transforms into a lunch spread highlighting Tamworth pork focaccia paired with white onion soup and locally caught fish. Drinks follow the same strict seasonality, pairing biodynamic wines with house kombucha brewed from foraged coastal herbs.

Room and atmosphere

Guests gather in a repurposed stone building that balances rustic warmth with clean lines and plenty of natural light. The walk-in layout encourages unhurried browsing through the pastry display before settling near large windows overlooking the estate gardens. Everything inside comes from scratch using ingredients sourced within a few miles, creating a relaxed dining rhythm that feels grounded rather than rushed. That steady pacing keeps regulars returning for afternoon coffees and weekend loaf purchases.

The Good Food Guide — Local Gem

Bowhouse, a repurposed stone farmstead on the organic-focused Balcaskie Estate, acts as a rural food and drink hub and has been home to the sprawling Baern Café & Bakery for several years. There’s a strong commitment to sustainability, everything is hyper-local and seasonal, and the blackboard menu changes frequently depending on what’s available. Featuring soups, sandwiches, sausage rolls and rarebits, it's the unusual and experimental flavour combinations that draw the Fife crowd: white onion, bay and Clava brie soup with rhubarb and hazelnut, say, or pulled Tamworth pork, smoked mayo and pickled cucumber focaccia. To drink, there’s a short list of natural, minimum-intervention wines, local beers (Futtle, of course), cider and cocktails.
