The story

Cantina Caruso Margate: Italian Delights and Natural Wines by the Coast

Roots in Campania and the Coast

Cantina Caruso in Margate channels the spirit of Campania through a curated selection of Italian cooking, where owners Simona Di Dio and Harry Ryder showcase produce sourced directly from family and friends back home. The couple established Bottega Caruso in 2017, expanding the concept with this wine bar and deli next door in June 2024. Their mission centers on sharing faultless raw materials, transforming a corner of Broad Street into a destination for rustic, authentic flavours.

Unfiddly Flavour and Fresh Pasta

Recognised by The Good Food Guide for its unfiddly, big-flavoured approach, the kitchen serves small(ish) plates that highlight regional specialties. Standout offerings include local squid and peas alongside an extraordinary aubergine parmigiana, complemented by Sardinian pickles for grazing. Beyond the daily menu, visitors can purchase freshly made pasta, preserved tomatoes, and extra virgin olive oil to take home. The space also functions as a deli stocked with ceramics, books, and artisanal chocolates, reinforcing the connection between the food and the culture of the region.

Natural Wines from Southern Vineyards

The wine list reflects a deep relationship with growers, featuring direct imports from five wineries across Campania and beyond. Highlights include Robb de Matt from Foglianise, where Gaetano Palumbo and Gabriele Calabrese craft natural wines with a punk spirit using spontaneous fermentation and zero additives. The roster also showcases Podere Veneri Vecchio, led by microbiologist Raffaello Annichiarico, whose ancient-vine expressions come from clay and tuff soils near Castelvenere. Guests can enjoy glasses of Nerocapitano while browsing the selection, which celebrates the rhythms of nature and community-driven agriculture.

A Neighbourhood Hangout with a Beachside Spirit

Situated next to Bottega Caruso, Cantina operates as a relaxed neighbourhood hub where the atmosphere remains rustic and welcoming. Staff pride themselves on the food and wine, creating a tucked-away feel despite the central location on Broad Street. Patrons often grab a bottle to take to the nearby coast, blending the casual energy of a wine bar with the quality of a dedicated import house. The venue hosts pasta-making workshops, fermenting classes, and private events around a large communal table, inviting locals to linger over conversation and good company.

The Good Food Guide — Good

Cantina Caruso is Margate’s typically cool answer to the problem of where to eat if you have no reservation. An Italian deli by day, it transforms at weekends into a walk-in wine bar with a brief menu of small(ish) plates. Despite being next door to alma mater Bottega Caruso, it has the tucked-away feel of a hidden gem – rustic and atmospheric, with charming staff who are clearly proud of the food and wine they serve. Much depends on sourcing, and Simona Di Dio and Harry Ryder have an enviable reputation for garnering faultless raw materials. Pop in for a glass of Nerocapitano (a Sicilian chilled red) and you could be tempted to add some Sardinian pickles and a plate or two of simple, affordable Italian classics. It’s the kind of unfiddly, big-flavoured food that we all like to eat, seen at its proudest in a dish of local squid and peas or the extraordinary aubergine parmigiana. No wonder Cantina is an all-year-round local hit.
