The story
At Fifteen Square Metres in Broadstairs, Modern British cooking takes shape through a disciplined focus on seasonality and global technique. Husband and wife team Tony and Becky Rodd moved their operation from South East London to the coast in early 2024, bringing five years of experience from their previous venture, Copper & Ink. Tony draws culinary inspiration from Japanese and Scandinavian traditions while prioritising ingredient provenance and strict waste reduction. Becky channels her background running a dedicated gluten free bakery into every component of the kitchen.
The Modern British kitchen sends out generously sized small plates directly to your table as they finish cooking. A ponzu glazed aubergine arrives alongside pickles and zhough, while pomegranate glazed lamb carries its own fat crumb and labneh. Corn fritters paired with guacamole and chilli crisp sit beside watermelon and whipped feta for brighter evenings. Every item avoids gluten entirely, including the wheat starch breads prepared safely for coeliacs. Poached apricots with cardamom cream close out service, offering a quiet counterpoint to the savoury courses.
The dining room measures exactly fifteen square metres, leaving room for sixteen seats and a compact galley kitchen tucked against one wall. This bijou layout creates a relaxed, home-like rhythm that earned the venue a recent Good Food Guide listing. Guests browse an ever shifting blackboard featuring global wine selections, often matched to the evolving Modern British menu. Well behaved dogs rest quietly beneath tables while owners sip through the evening, proving the straightforward approach strips away pretence and leaves only careful cooking and honest hospitality.
