The story

Staple Stores: Artisanal Bakery and Cafe in Westgate-on-Sea

Traditional techniques and seasonal ingredients

Tucked behind Paydens Pharmacy along a narrow Westgate-on-Sea walkway, Staple Stores in Westgate-on-Sea operates as an artisanal bakery and cafe built on careful craftsmanship. The team relies on traditional methods to shape daily batches of sourdough and viennoiserie pastries from locally sourced, seasonal produce. This dedication to consistent quality recently earned the spot a Local Gem designation from the Good Food Guide.

Savoury plates and signature bakes

The kitchen runs a straightforward menu designed for quick service and steady turnover. Guests regularly order the spicy chicken and bacon focaccia or a warm quiche layered with squash, kale, and goat’s cheese alongside beetroot chunks. Sweet tooths often seek out the cruffin, which blends croissant dough with pastry cream, while a dense vanilla cheesecake rounds out the display case.

Local coffee and quiet surroundings

Pale timber tables and whitewashed walls create a relaxed setting that stays lively from eight in the morning until early afternoon. Every espresso and filter brew comes from Curve Coffee, a local roaster known for small batch sourcing. Staff pair the coffee with fresh milk from Hinxden Dairy cows, offering oat and soya options for those who prefer plant-based alternatives.

The Good Food Guide — Local Gem

Tucked down a (very) hard-to-find alley and upbeat from the off, this tiny bakery-café springs to life at 8am and keeps up the pace until just after lunch. An easy-going menu, served in simple (and often busy) whitewashed and pale wood surrounds, might include spicy chicken and bacon focaccia, veggie sausage rolls, a three-cheese toastie or warm squash, kale and goat’s cheese quiche served, perhaps, with a dollop of tasty houmous, beetroot chunks and a green salad. Look out, too, for the excellent viennoiserie, superb cheesecake and great bread. Unlicensed. Also in Broadstairs, Ramsgate and at the Turner Contemporary café, Margate.
