The story
Native operates as a seasonal British seafood kitchen in Sheffield, rooted in a lineage that stretches back to a Hillsborough fishmongery founded in 1921. Chef-owner Christian Szurko purchased the original Mann family trade in 2005 and translated his London experience at The Ivy and J Sheekey into a local operation. He designed the menu to follow the weekly catch, moving away from rigid formats so dishes like hand-dived Scottish scallops or south coast lobster arrive at their peak. This commitment to provenance keeps the kitchen grounded while allowing room for cross-cultural experiments.
The seafood kitchen sits behind a slim counter displaying fresh fish, giving diners a direct view of how Tiger Prawns receive a bright chilli and lime finish or how the JH Mann Fish Pie gets topped with a sharp brioche crust. Regular staples anchor the service, but the specials board introduces sharper turns like maple-cured salmon paired with gochujang and kimchi, or whole sea bream stuffed with jerk butter and served over lightly curried creamed corn. Grilled Savoy cabbage dressed in a garlic emulsion with smoked anchovies often rounds out the main courses. Desserts lean toward texture rather than heaviness, making the raspberry and pistachio pavlova a reliable finale.
High ceilings, exposed steel beams, and bare brick walls establish an industrial framework that softens around chunky wooden tables and velvet-covered banquettes. Colourful modern art breaks up the raw surfaces while the staff deliver classic South Yorkshire hospitality alongside a small-batch wine list featuring selections like an organic Grüner Veltliner. That steady combination of straightforward cooking and attentive service earned the venue a Good Food Guide rating for 2026. Visitors quickly notice how the space balances brisk preparation with comfortable seating for long evenings.
