The story

Trattoria Maria Sheffield: Grounded Italian Cooking & Shared Plates

Southern roots and handcrafted pasta

Trattoria Maria brings a grounded approach to Italian cooking to Sheffield from the team behind Bench. Named after founder Ronnie’s grandmother, the Italian kitchen emphasizes hand rolled pasta, seasonal plates, and fire cooked cuts built for sharing among friends. The menu stays rooted in Mediterranean tradition, relying on straightforward preparation rather than unnecessary complexity.

Shared plates and a lively dining room

Guests step into one expansive room that naturally builds volume and movement throughout the evening. The antipasti spread provides immediate comfort, pairing creamy stracciatella and tangy caponata with very soft focaccia meant for dipping. Heavier selections like saffron and cuttlefish ragù arancini carry the meal forward, maintaining that bright regional character from start to finish.

Cocktails, natural wines, and quiet acclaim

The beverage program leans heavily on an amari-focused selection paired with low-intervention and classic Italian wines. A straightforward all-day Negroni sits at five pounds, supporting a relaxed pace for those lingering after dinner. That reliable attention to value and execution recently secured the venue a place on the Good Food Guide Readers Recommend roster.

The quaint name contrasts with the very urban setting of this new arrival from the team behind beloved Bench. On a particularly uncharacterful street in Sheffield's 'Heart of the City' development, the exterior is all flat walls and fogged windows, while inside it’s one big room which gets buzzy and loud of a weekend evening. There are real gems to be found among the antipasti – stracciatella and caponata with very soft focaccia for dunking or superb saffron and cuttlefish ragù arancini – while southern Italian sunshine dominates the pastas and secondi . A word of warning: the dirty Martini on the pre-drinks menu is only £6.50 and not at all small, while the classic Negroni is a tempting £5 all day, every day. Wines are funky and more of an investment.
