The story
It all began in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1935, when Bishan Das Anand started a catering business. That legacy, now four generations deep, is the foundation of Madhu’s Southall. The restaurant opened as Madhu’s Brilliant in 1980, founded by brothers Sanjay and Sanjeev Anand, then aged just 17 and 16. The name Madhu’s comes from the nickname of their father, Jagdish Kumar Anand, while their mother, Krishna Kumari Anand, was the head chef who shaped the restaurant’s early success.
Today, the family business is led by Sanjay Anand MBE, Sanjeev Anand, Arjun Anand, and Poonam Ball. Their story is one of quiet innovation: in 1990, Madhu’s conceptualised and manufactured the first-ever Karai Stand, allowing family-style table service in banqueting. That same pioneering spirit carries through to the kitchen, where the focus remains on authentic Indian cuisine, rooted in tradition and refined for modern palates.
Madhu’s Southall is a place where the warmth of a family-run operation meets the precision of a kitchen that has earned a place in the MICHELIN Guide 2026. The recognition is a natural fit for a restaurant that has long been a cornerstone of British Asian dining, known for its depth of flavour and generous hospitality.
The atmosphere is welcoming and unpretentious, a reflection of the family’s belief that great food should be shared. While the menu evolves, the approach is consistent: bold, aromatic Indian dishes that honour the heritage of the Anand family. Whether you’re a regular or a first-time visitor, the experience is grounded in the same values that have guided Madhu’s for nearly a century—quality, consistency, and a genuine love for what they do.
