The story

The Barley Sheaf, St Austell – Modern British Pub & Restaurant, Cornwall

Welcome to the Barley Sheaf

In the quiet Cornish village of Gorran, near the coastal path of Gorran Haven, The Barley Sheaf is a Grade II listed pub that dates back to 1837. Today, it operates as a welcoming pub and restaurant, its relaxed atmosphere matched by cooking that is proper, unpretentious, and bold on flavours.

The kitchen is led by Head Chef and General Manager Daniel Hyams. Cooking has been in Dan’s DNA from a young age, and he brings experience from various Michelin-starred kitchens and a stint working in France. He previously served as Head Chef at the Headland Hotel, where the team won a 5-star award. At The Barley Sheaf, his goal is simple: serve the best quality Modern British food and drink in the area, supported by a dedicated team. The ethos of Dan and his team is to run the kind of pub they would love to visit themselves—accessible, sustainable, and offering great value.

The restaurant is particularly fortunate to have a kitchen garden at the back, supplying herbs and other produce that travel straight from garden to plate. The garden itself is also a lovely spot to enjoy a meal al fresco. Bar snacks are served throughout the day, and the menus—from bar snacks and a la carte to Sunday lunch—are crafted to showcase the finest Cornwall has to offer, with what the team calls a "Barley Twist." The drinks selection is equally thoughtful, with a fantastic range of beers and wines.

The Barley Sheaf’s quality has been recognised by Michelin, which gave its recommendation to the restaurant for 2026, cementing its place as a destination for modern, ingredient-led cooking in Cornwall.

The Good Food Guide — Good

Gorran is apparently a thing of many parts – Haven, High Lanes and Churchtown – but they are essentially one. Just by the titular church is the Barley Sheaf pub, which has stood since Queen Victoria's accession but has been sensitively freshened and spruced into the modern era, with a clean light look, a black slate floor and many local artworks on a seascape theme for sale. The cooking keeps its feet firmly in the pub ethos, rather than pitching into pretension, so there are steak and ale pies, fish and chips, and sausage and mash for the traditionalists, but some more cutting-edge dishes too. A hefty ham hock croquette in golden crumb is crammed to capacity with bright pink meat, and accompanied by a warm serving of celeriac rémoulade bristling with mustard seeds and a dollop of truffle mayo. That could be followed by plaice in chicken jus with chestnuts and cavolo nero. Veggie dishes lack nothing for substance and richness, if our wild mushroom ravioli with capers and celery in a thickly memorable tomato ragù is any indicator. Finish with sticky toffee pudding and clotted cream, or an inspired cheese selection. A simple wine list just about does the job, but could afford to be a little more adventurous in the context.
