The story

The Lytton Arms Stevenage | Modern British Pub Near Knebworth Estate

Chef Mikey and the kitchen

Head Chef Mikey runs the kitchen at The Lytton Arms in Stevenage, where the Modern British menu highlights full carcass utilisation and fresh sourcing. He brings energy from his work across Anglian Country Inns to a space overlooking the Knebworth Estate. The dishes balance traditional pub expectations with careful ingredient selection, keeping preparations straightforward yet flavourful. Guests appreciate the shift toward honest techniques that let the produce speak for itself.

Seasonal plates and local flavours

Starters often feature bold combinations like Brancaster mussels served on toasted sourdough with lobster bisque, or a rich confit chicken and leek terrine. Main courses showcase the region through dishes such as slow-braised Knebworth Estate venison and beef resting on creamed potato with excellent braised carrots and sweet baby onions in a glossy gravy. Sticky toffee pudding follows with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream. The dishes demonstrate a Modern British cooking style rooted in generous portions and feisty flavours.

The historic setting

This late nineteenth-century building sits within the grounds of the Knebworth Estate, where red deer once roamed and still echo in the local lore. Dining options range from the rustic, low-key interior to a bright rear conservatory that accommodates private gatherings. Outdoors, a beer garden offers views over acres of countryside, while a wood burner provides shelter during cooler months. The space remains comfortable year round thanks to full air conditioning. Staff deliver the food in an unfussy manner, fostering a relaxed environment suitable for both casual lunches and easy celebrations.

Real ales and drinks

The bar operates like a beer festival 365 days a year, rotating guest casks alongside a core selection of five craft and six cask ales. Pour choices span styles from chocolatey porters to fruity goses, session pales, and classic bitters. A short international wine list complements the beer-heavy offering. Every drink supports the venue's reputation for generosity and quality, rounding out a solid Modern British dining experience.

The Good Food Guide — Good

Overlooking the Knebworth Estate, the unassuming, late 19th-century Lytton Arms absolutely nails being a real pub: generous with its hospitality, famed for its regularly changing roster of real ales (five craft, at least six cask) and spot-on when it comes to decent food – a genuine find, in our book. Good for everyday dining as well as easy celebrations, this is a place with an eagerness to feed people well, be it lingering Sunday roasts, lunchtime sandwiches, pub classics or seasonal specials. Food is served in the rustic, low-key dining room or bright, spacious rear conservatory, and the deal is a regularly changing menu of British and European classics full of feisty flavours, fresh local ingredients and good pricing. Typical starters might include Brancaster mussels on toasted sourdough with lobster bisque or confit chicken and leek terrine. At our lunch, a toweringly meaty dish of slow-braised Knebworth Estate venison and beef served atop creamed potato and excellent braised carrots (one of several generous main courses) was lifted by sweet, juicy baby onions in a glossy, full-bodied gravy, while a sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream made a fortifying finish. It’s all delivered in an unfussy manner by relaxed, enthusiastic staff, and everyone seems to be having a jolly good time. Aside from real ales, the drinks offer also includes a short, well-priced international wine list.
