The story
At Circa, the name is also the promise. This Modern British restaurant in Totnes operates on a principle of minimal waste, with a menu shaped entirely by the season and what is available from its own market garden at Koo Yong. The kitchen works closely with the bar to repurpose by-products into inventive cocktails and soft drinks, using homegrown and foraged ingredients. Small, low-intervention wine and cider makers are championed, and nothing on the plate is incidental.
Circa’s counter-dining format brings guests face to face with the cooking. The set menus – four courses at lunch, six at dinner – change regularly, reflecting what the garden and local suppliers offer. The restaurant’s commitment to reducing waste is not a tagline but a daily practice, from preserving to fermenting. The cooking is precise, ingredient-led, and quietly confident, earning Circa a Michelin Recommended distinction.
Circa first opened in Exeter before moving to Totnes, where it has built a loyal community of regulars. As of autumn 2025, the team will return to Exeter, closing the Totnes chapter in early July. The Totnes site will continue under a new project led by general manager Jon. For now, Circa remains a destination for diners seeking thoughtful, low-impact cooking in a relaxed setting – with full wheelchair access and a warm, unpretentious atmosphere.
