The story

Gather in Totnes: Modern British Dining with Wild Foraged Flair

The kitchen and its philosophy

Gather in Totnes delivers refined Modern British cuisine built around wild foraged ingredients and regional suppliers. The kitchen recently secured a Good Food Guide award for its tenacious simplicity executed with careful polish. Chef Harrison Brockington leads this compact space on Fore Street, shifting the menu with Devon fields, shorelines, and hedgerows. His approach keeps the focus on seasonal sourcing rather than heavy styling.

Seasonal highlights and tasting formats

A full tasting menu opens with hedgerow beignets served alongside herb mayonnaise and foraged leaves. Subsequent courses highlight native lobster with new potatoes and fennel, followed by confit duck leg paired with wild plums. Guests can also select a dedicated vegetable tasting route featuring tomato tartlets, herb-crusted aubergine, and poached eggs. Every plate balances foraged textures with precise technique.

Light wood interiors and relaxed service

The dining room offers a cosy fine dining environment defined by pale timber finishes and an open kitchen hatch. Visitors often spot Brockington preparing plates before they reach the table. The staff maintains a steady, welcoming pace throughout both lunch and dinner services. This unpretentious setting lets the seasonal produce take centre stage without theatrical distractions, keeping the focus squarely on quality British cooking.

There is more to Totnes than twee teas and pub lunches if you scout around – although you need look no further than Gather, which takes its place near the bottom end of Fore Street in a room that's all light wood and voluble welcome. Harrison Brockington can be seen through the kitchen hatch, hard at work producing impressively presented contemporary dishes of genuine flair. Menus founded on Devon foraging are a lure, especially in mushroom season, and the 'tasters' extend to a vegetable version that might embrace hedgerow tortellini in velouté or a wild spring vegetable tartlet topped with a poached egg and béarnaise sauce. The style is one of tenacious simplicity, but brought off with a high degree of polish – as in a cider broth of St Austell mussels with wild sea herbs. Main dishes bring satisfaction in the shape of locally farmed duck on a bed of petits pois à la française or gurnard in crab bisque with asparagus. A separate cheese course might pair Ragstone goat's cheese with a brioche-encased fig roll, ahead of something sweet – perhaps rhubarb vacherin in its own consommé with whipped Chantilly cream. A short wine list does its job.
