The story

Mary's Sandwich Shop Whitby | The Good Food Guide Local Gem

From horsebox to village shop

Mary's Sandwich Shop in Sandsend near Whitby presents International cuisine centred on smashburgers and creative sandwiches. The business started in a converted horsebox serving Los Angeles-style smashburgers on the beach before moving into a permanent location inside an old village shop. The team preserves a relaxed neighbourhood vibe while drawing praise as a Good Food Guide Local Gem for combining quality cooking with a welcoming seaside setting.

Smashburgers and inventive sarnies

The kitchen produces house-made bread and builds bold flavour profiles across a menu that shifts throughout the day. Friday and Saturday evenings feature smashburgers cooked to order, such as The Mary's, which piles two smashed patties onto a toasted brioche bun with American cheese, crispy bacon, caramelised onion, house pickles, and roast garlic mayo. Midday service highlights detailed sandwiches including The Porchetta Banh Mi with Vietnamese spiced belly pork, spicy peanut sauce, pickled daikon, and hot honey, alongside The French Dip served with roast Yorkshire beef and a separate pot of gravy.

Coastal views and local provisions

Situated on The Parade, the shop looks out toward the North Yorks Moors coast, making it a natural halt for visitors exploring the area. An onsite deli complements the hot menu with an International selection of craft beers, natural wines, and spirits, plus curated dry goods. Breakfast runs until 11:30 am daily, offering free-range eggs and smashed sausage patties on toasted brioche with accompaniments like sriracha or smoked jalapeño mayo. The operation relies on independent suppliers such as Jackson's Butchers in Ruswarp and Darkwoods Coffee, keeping the kitchen rooted in local partnerships.

The Good Food Guide — Local Gem

Sandsend on the North Yorks Moors coast has been a popular holiday spot since the 19th century, and this cool, seaside café is a welcome addition – a hark back (almost) to bucket-and-spade holidays with its pleasant, laid-back vibe. Other than ‘smashburgers’  two nights a week (Fri and Sat), sandwiches are all they do: breakfast includes sausage, egg and cheese on a muffin with house ketchup, while lunch brings the likes of home-cured salt beef, Emmental, house pickles, American mustard, caramelised onion and Mary's sauce, stuffed in pillowy home made foccacia. Good coffee, craft beer and natural wines – plus breathtaking views – add to the pleasure of a visit.
