The story

The Magpie Café in Whitby | Award-Winning Harbour Seafood

A Century of Salt Air

The Magpie Café serves fresh seafood in Whitby along the harbour edge, anchoring the town since the nineteen forties. The striking black and white building faces the quay where fishing vessels dock throughout the day. This enduring presence earned a Good rating from The Good Food Guide in 2026, recognising a kitchen that prioritises directness over theatrical presentation. Patrons gather near the windows to watch the tides roll past while enjoying straightforward meals.

Ruled by the Tides

The kitchen follows the rhythm of the North Sea rather than a rigid menu. Cooks fry woof, ling, rock and coley alongside familiar haddock and plaice, aiming for exceptionally crisp batter and fluffy chips. Daily plates rotate rapidly, offering Whitby crab cakes dressed with katsu mayo or grilled Dover sole accompanied by North Sea langoustines and seaweed butter. This adaptable method ensures the British seafood selection reflects exactly what reached the pier that morning.

Sweet Finishes and Strong Teas

Visitors consistently reserve room for old fashioned puddings such as boozy sherry trifle, comforting rice pudding or hot fruit crumble poured with custard. The beverage roster includes local beer, wine and sparkling selections, though many locals prefer a proper cup of tea after eating. These simple accompaniments complete a dining routine grounded in seasonal availability and coastal seafood traditions. The establishment continues to welcome guests who value honest flavour above elaborate plating.

The Good Food Guide — Good

A Whitby landmark since the 1940s, this doughty purveyor of great-value fish and chips by the sea stands tall – a striking black-and-white building overlooking the quay and the boats which supply the freshest of fish. It's tempting to wax lyrical about the crispness of the batter, the sheer delight of the fluffy yet crispy chips, the clamorous chatter and everything else that captivates visitors to this stronghold of honest-to-goodness Britishness. Having reached the pinnacle of the fryer’s art, the kitchen is ruled by the catch – so be prepared for woof, ling, rock and coley alongside the ubiquitous haddock, cod and plaice. Away from the battered stuff, there are daily specials aplenty, from Whitby crab cakes with katsu mayo to grilled Dover sole with North Sea langoustines and seaweed butter. But do save room for one of the legendary old-fashioned desserts – boozy sherry trifle, rice pudding, fruit crumble with custard. There is beer, wine and fizz if you want it, although what’s wrong with a proper, strong ‘cuppa char’?
