The story
Billy’s brings modern British cooking to Hawkshead near Windermere, situated within the historic grounds of The Croft where the Smith and Barr families have hosted visitors since the 1950s. Recognised as a Local Gem in The Good Food Guide 2026, this bright and cosy venue replaced former holiday lodges to accommodate ramblers, families, and locals alike. Named to honour William Barr, a lifelong resident, the space comfortably transitions from morning coffee service to evening cocktail hours.
Executive Chef Joe Daly applies classical training and precise technique to a menu rooted in Lake District provenance. Following successful tenures at The Brown Horse Inn in Winster and a private shoot lodge near Arles Beck, he now elevates familiar comfort foods using locally sourced ingredients within his modern British kitchen. His culinary philosophy prioritises the region's agricultural output, ensuring every plate reflects the surrounding countryside.
The kitchen reinterprets beloved staples with contemporary precision, starting with a Cumberland Scotch egg accompanied by dark brown sauce. Evening courses feature robust combinations like roast chicken breast served over truffle mash, alongside a Roscoff onion braised gently in Hawkshead ale. Desserts maintain this grounded elegance, offering a traditional sticky toffee pudding enriched with a distinct miso butterscotch finish.
