The story

Mathilde's Café Windermere | Scandinavian Dining at Heaton Cooper Studio

From Fjords to the Lakes

Mathilde's Café in Windermere delivers authentic Scandinavian cuisine rooted in the enduring romance of artist Alfred Heaton Cooper and his Norwegian wife Mathilde. Located within the Heaton Cooper Studio in Grasmere, the kitchen honors their 1894 marriage by preparing dishes that reflect the simplicity and depth of Nordic cooking traditions. Alfred discovered Mathilde in the fjords of Balestrand before the couple eventually settled in the Lake District, a connection that continues to shape every plate served today.

Honest Nordic Flavors

The menu features a salad pairing smoked mackerel with nashi pear and buckwheat, alongside Swedish meatball smørrebrød served with lingonberry. Traditional cinnamon buns appear frequently, while fresh Scandinavian-inspired cakes baked daily provide a creative sweet option. Each dish relies on robust ingredients from land and sea, ensuring the cooking remains honest and flavorful without relying on heavy preparation.

Calm Gallery Setting

Inside the gallery-linked space, floor-to-ceiling windows capture views of the fells, illuminating an interior characterized by clean lines and a calm atmosphere. Guests can also step out onto the terrace, where dogs are permitted and the ambiance stays relaxed. The environment encourages lingering over meals, mirroring the couple's original belief in finding joy through simple pleasures and good company.

Floor-to-ceiling windows take in the stunning fells, while contemporary, clean-lined interiors create a sense of calm. The menu lightly reflects the Scandinavian heritage with cinnamon buns, Swedish meatball smørrebrød with lingonberry or, perhaps, a salad of smoked mackerel, nashi pear and buckwheat.
