The story

The Yan Windermere: Modern British Dining at Broadrayne Farm

The Kitchen and Local Produce

The Yan brings modern British cooking to Broadrayne Farm, just outside Windermere. A family-run team prepares daily menus built around fiercely local ingredients. They treat the surrounding countryside as their pantry, turning regional beef into multiple dinner plates while maintaining high breakfast standards. This commitment to place keeps the modern British table grounded and responsive.

Signature Plates and Seasonal Sides

Grasmere Herdwick lamb forms the foundation of a celebrated shepherd’s pie that draws consistent praise. Guests often order the Basque mussel stew or opt for crispy sushi rice paired with wild mushrooms when vegetables take centre stage. Portion sizes run generously across the board, which explains why visitors frequently skip crab and sweetcorn fritters to save room for the main courses.

The Farm Setting and Dining Room

Visitors navigate a quiet track off the route between Grasmere and Keswick to reach the property. The interior leans toward rustic aesthetics that match the surrounding farmland, creating a relaxed space for both evening meals and weekend gatherings. Staff members guide guests through the selections with practical knowledge rather than pretence, reflecting the thoughtful execution that earned recent Good Food Guide recognition.

Beverages and Sweet Endings

Desserts lean on seasonal British fruits, most notably an egg custard tart layered with gooseberry and elderflower compôte. Drink lists feature homemade fruit cordials alongside non-alcoholic spritzes for those avoiding spirits. A compact selection of global wines rounds out the service, allowing the local harvest to drive every plate.

The Good Food Guide — Good

‘The entire dining experience captures everything we love about the Lakes,’ commented one reporter; ‘from the rustic aesthetics, the friendly, knowledgeable staff, locally sourced produce, and – of course – the incredible food, every detail feels thoughtfully done.’ There’s a sense of true dedication about this family-run ‘bistro with beds’ found up an easy-to-miss track off the Grasmere to Keswick road. Here, an industrious kitchen produces daily menus specialising in fiercely local produce, including a mighty ‘brekkie’ offered to all-comers, as well as stupendous Sunday roasts (including ‘the best mash ever’). At dinner, local beef can appear in several guises and Grasmere Herdwick lamb stars in the signature shepherd’s pie, but the kitchen isn’t averse to going walkabout for the likes of Basque mussel stew or crispy sushi rice with wild mushrooms. Portions are hefty, so you might want to skip a starter (say, crab and sweetcorn fritters) or dessert (egg custard tart with gooseberry and elderflower compôte). As for drinks, there are non-alcoholic spritzes, homemade fruit cordials and on-trend cocktails, plus a short list of global wines.
