The story

Black Wheat Club York: Seasonal Modern European Bistro and Microbakery

Roots and Rhythm

Founders Tomasz Mlynarski and Marta Obuchowska steer this independent bistro with a focus on homecoming and honest, seasonal cooking. The Polish couple treats their kitchen as a laboratory for familiar flavours, crafting everything from house-made bread and ferments to sausages entirely in-house. Their Modern European approach balances creativity with comfort, ensuring every dish feels considered without being overdone. This dedication to craft has earned them a Very Good recommendation from The Good Food Guide, which praises the couple as a breath of fresh air for the city's food scene.

From Sourdough to Sharing Plates

Service shifts dynamically between daytime indulgence and evening conviviality. Mornings draw crowds for poached eggs resting on creamy goat's cheese and pickled radish, finished with pumpkin chilli oil and served alongside croissant cinnamon swirls or fabulous home-baked sourdough. As dusk falls, the menu transforms into bold and playful sharing plates designed to surprise. Standout evening offerings might include grilled asparagus draped in ginger and anchovy butter beurre blanc, or a roast chicken ballotine stuffed with herbs and garlic. The culinary team works closely with local producers to source the freshest ingredients, allowing the menu to evolve constantly throughout the seasons.

Warm Interiors and Wine Gems

Dark panelled walls frame the room, balanced by light oak furniture and accents of bright kilims that create a genuinely welcoming space. Guests can enjoy an ever-evolving wine list curated with care, focusing on approachable bottles from winemakers who share the club's philosophy of quality and craft. Whether visiting for a quick coffee during the day or settling in for wine-led evenings, the atmosphere remains grounded and unpretentious. The result is a Modern European destination where locals and visitors alike feel at ease while enjoying intelligent, flavour-forward cooking.

The Good Food Guide — Very Good

‘Boy, would I prefer to keep it a secret for just us locals!’ If there’s one thing York residents, visitors and GFG reporters agree on, it’s the pleasure to be had from a meal at this enterprising hybrid café/restaurant, where fresh modern decor (dark panelled walls, light oak furniture, bright kilims) makes for a relaxed and genuinely welcoming experience. Tomasz Mlynarski and Marta Obuchowska, the enterprising Polish couple behind the Black Wheat Club, are ‘a breath of fresh air for the city’s food scene.’ They operate two services. By day, there's an informal drop-in brunch menu, where the likes of poached eggs with creamy goat’s cheese, pickled radish and pumpkin chilli oil on fabulous home-baked sourdough could be served alongside delicious pastries (we recommend the croissant cinnamon swirls ) and very good coffee . In the evening, they ramp things up with a selection of tasty and inventive sharing plates based on superb local ingredients – perhaps grilled asparagus with ginger and anchovy butter beurre blanc or roast chicken ballotine stuffed with herbs and garlic. Expect a concise, intelligent, constantly changing and approachable wine list, too.
