The story
Brancusi in York brings a relaxed approach to modern British cooking inside a historical building on Micklegate. Founders Florencia Clifford and Hugo Hildyard expanded their operation alongside chef James Gilroy after visiting Constantin Brâncusi’s Paris atelier and adopting the artist’s focus on simple, noble materials. This shared vision turned a vacant premises into a vibrant neighborhood spot that values straightforward hospitality over rigid formality.
The Good Food Guide recognized the kitchen’s commitment to produce-led menus when it awarded a Good rating for 2026. Dishes draw heavily from community supplier Food Circle York, placing vegetables and sustainably raised meats at the center of service. Guests commonly order chalk stream trout dressed with crab hollandaise or crisp pheasant goujons alongside a creamy peppercorn sauce. This British kitchen treats vegetable plates with equal weight, offering a potato and Gruyère gratin or squash with brown butter and sheep’s curd across both lunch and dinner.
The space maintains a casual energy throughout the week, shifting smoothly between weekend brunch crowds and quieter evening service. Wine selections begin at twenty-six pounds per bottle, pairing naturally with the shareable style of service. Sweet finishes lean toward refined combinations rather than heavy pastries, highlighting an orange and cranberry sorbet or a chocolate pot layered with black treacle ice cream and tofu ganache. Every element reflects the founders’ belief that contemporary British cooking requires little decoration to stand out.
