The story
Haxby Bakehouse in York operates as a dedicated bakery where Phil Clayton turns grain milled by Yorkshire Organic Millers into slow-fermented loaves that attract visitors long before the shelves empty. The business originated from a family project when Clayton's daughter sold homemade bread during a school investment challenge, prompting him and his wife Tina to launch the shop in 2008. Clayton remains largely self-taught yet adheres strictly to traditional techniques, rejecting artificial improvers and preservatives to achieve the depth of flavour recognized by a Good Food Guide Local Gem award in 2026.
The bakery displays award-winning staples such as the Yorkshire Mill loaf, which won a Real Bread Award at the Tiptree World Bread Awards for its use of 100 percent regional flour, and a pain au levain that received a gold standard accolade. Bakers also produce a distinct Yorkshire rye infused with cumin, coriander, and fennel, while the deli section complements the fresh bakery output with focaccia sandwiches and daily cakes from Sophie at BakeHouse Barn. Shoppers can build picnic spreads featuring hand-crafted pies from The Pie Kitchen York. The deli also stocks charcuterie from Lishman's and smoked fish delivered by Staal Smokehouse.
The original village location retains the character of its Ryedale Court beginnings, offering outdoor benches where patrons consume their selections alongside hot drinks from the attached café. An expanded unit at Clifton Moor Business Park provides additional oven capacity and a wider selection of store-cupboard provisions, though demand frequently depletes stock by midday. The consistent quality has garnered praise from industry figures including Tommy Banks, chef-owner of the Michelin-starred Black Swan, who admitted to eating an entire focaccia upon retrieving supplies for his kitchen.
