The story

Partisan York: Global Cuisine and Arts Space on Micklegate | WattAFork

A Zen cook's long-awaited table

Partisan brings a distinct wave of global cuisine to York's Micklegate, where owner Florencia Clifford realized a decades-long dream. After studying Zen cooking practices in Wales and working in New York catering, she opened this independent restaurant and arts space in October 2016. The kitchen operates with a meditative attention to detail, drawing on her Argentine upbringing and Italian, Scottish, and French heritage to shape a menu that feels personal yet worldly.

Seasonal plates from the Yorkshire Wolds

Florencia's partner Hugo farms arable crops and keeps cattle at Plaster Pitts on the edge of the Wolds, supplying the kitchen with produce from their restored house garden. This direct connection informs dishes like slow-scrambled Persian eggs with dates and almond dukkah, or shakshuka baked in spicy tomato sauce with feta and sumac. The kitchen also highlights local suppliers, serving Johnson's free-range eggs, M&K sausages, and bread from Haxby Bakehouse. A caramelised chorizo Iberico toast topped with Manchego and Padron peppers showcases the eclectic spirit of international cooking found here.

Vintage rooms and a gallery of flavors

Recognized as a Local Gem in The Good Food Guide 2026, Partisan functions as both a dining room and a showcase for visual art. The neo-Victorian building contains separate upstairs and downstairs spaces, plus a large garden marquee that draws crowds during warm weather. Shoppers often queue for the house-baked sourdough loaves and daily pastries, including rhubarb pastel de nata and gluten-free brownies. Antique pieces and contemporary artworks hang among the vintage decor, reflecting the venue's dual role as a cultural hub where brunch remains the standout occasion on a shifting global menu.

The Good Food Guide — Local Gem

A delightful daytime favourite on Micklegate, this indie café and arts space scores with its vintage decor and relaxed, slightly bohemian vibe. There are two smallish rooms, upstairs and down – the big marquee in the garden is for overspill and best considered on warm days. Brunch is the main event and the line-up is global, from sobrasada and goat’s cheese toast to a homely Persian chicken stew accompanied by a plain tortilla. They serve good-quality coffee too. Expect queues of shoppers outside, eager to snap up Partisan’s excellent sourdough loaves, cakes and pastries (we were tempted by their rhubarb pastel de nata).
