The story
Just beyond Micklegate Bar, the 12th-century gateway into historic York, chef-owner Neil Bentinck opened Skosh in the summer of 2016. The restaurant occupies a newly refurbished Grade II listed building, and in early 2024, Bentinck expanded into the adjoining property. The result is a larger yet still intimate space that retains the original style and atmosphere: a bespoke dining room with an open-concept kitchen, a bar with walk-in tables, a private dining room for up to twelve, and a second dining area overlooking the kitchen.
Skosh describes its cooking as contemporary British with an international influence. The menu is built around snacks and small plates, designed for grazing course by course or as a complete dining experience. The style is precise yet playful, with dishes that change frequently. A succinct wine list offers every bottle by the glass, alongside seasonal cocktails and a selection of local and international craft beers.
The restaurant’s comfortable, informal approach has earned it a Michelin Bib Gourmand for good quality, good value cooking. It’s a place where uncomplicated, refined dishes meet a welcoming atmosphere – Modern British cooking that feels both grounded and surprising.
