The story
Within the ancient walls of Grays Court, a hotel that has stood since 1091, The Bow Room Restaurant offers a distinctly modern take on British fine dining. Head Chef Ian Doyle brings a formidable pedigree to the kitchen, having cooked at Copenhagen's Noma and served as Head Chef at the Michelin-starred Oaxen Krog in Stockholm. His experience shapes a menu rooted in Modern British cuisine, where technique serves the ingredient rather than the other way around.
The kitchen sources produce from the best local suppliers and, notably, from the hotel's own kitchen gardens tucked into the heart of the city. Fruit, vegetables, and herbs are grown just steps from the dining room, lending a seasonal immediacy to each plate. This commitment to quality and locality has earned The Bow Room a place in the Michelin Guide for 2026, alongside three AA Rosettes for culinary excellence and a coveted AA Breakfast Award.
Dining here is a relaxed but polished affair. The restaurant is open Wednesday through Saturday, offering both an à la carte menu and a tasting menu. A pre-booking is required, and the team asks that guests inform them of any dietary restrictions in advance. The atmosphere matches the setting—a historic house that has played host to kings and noblemen—but without any stiffness. There is no formal dress code; the welcome is genuine, the service professional and friendly.
For those staying overnight, breakfast is cooked to order and included with all rooms. Lunch is served daily, and on fine days, the walled garden offers a particularly pleasant spot. The Bow Room proves that a restaurant with centuries of history can still feel fresh, precise, and entirely of its time.
